THE MARCHE AND PICENUM AREA

Cupra Maritima is the perfect starting point to discover the Piceno area and the Marche. Piceno is a land rich in history that combine sea with countryside, hills, and mountains. Ascoli Piceno, with its wonderful Piazza del Popolo, is the capital of the province. The main square hosts Palazzo dei Capitani and the famous Caffè Meletti, a wonderful example of Italian Art Nouveau building. Not too far away, you can admire Palazzo dell’Arrengo with its art gallery and the Museum of Modern Art Osvaldo Licini. In August the Quintana procession and joust is a revived tradition, based on medieval documents and artwork. Offida is another wonderful village worth to visit, once there you can’t miss out the church of Santa Maria della Rocca and the teather Serpente Aureo. Moving a little more north in the region, we find the city of Fermo, with its wonderful square, its cathedral, and its famous art gallery. Another village worth a visit is Torre di Palme where you will be charmed by the wonderful view and the typical restaurants. For mountain lovers, Sibillini and Laga mountains offer a wide range of hikes and mountain bike routes.

TRADITIONAL POPULAR GESTIVALS

Cupra Maritima is the perfect starting point to discover the Piceno area and the tradizione. Piceno is a land rich in history that can link the sea with the country side, hills and mountains. Ascoli Piceno, with its wonderful Piazza del Popolo, is the capital of the province. The square hosts Palazzo dei Capitani and the famous Caffè Meletti, a wonderful example of Italian Art Nouveau building. Not far away, Palazzo dell’Arrengo with the art gallery and the Museum of Modern Art “Osvaldo Licini”. During August the Quintana procession and joust is a revived tradition, based on medieval documents and artwork. Offida is another wonderful village which is worth visiting. The most important monuments are the church of Santa Maria della Rocca and the teather of Serpente Aureo. Offida is also famous for the historical carnival, called Bov Fint and Vlurd. Moving to the North of Piceno we find the city of Fermo, with its wonderful square, its cathedral and its famous art gallery. An hamlet of Fermo, Torre di Palme, is very attractive for its wonderful view on the coast and its typical restaurants. For mountain lovers, Sibillini and Laga mountains offer a wide range of hikes and mountain bike routes.During all the year the surroundings of Cupra offer a huge amount of popular and gastronomic festivals, the so called “Sagra”. The most famous take place in August: the Sagra of depp fried olives in Monteprandone, of the mussel in Pedaso and of Maccheroncini (a special kind of egg pasta) in Campofilone. In September Ortezzano propose the festival of wine and Lapedona of the “vino cotto” (a sort of boiled sweet wine). The 11th of November the S. Martino Fair takes place in the near town of Grottammare. Carnival is also an important period of the year in the Piceno. The most famous historical Carnival takes place in Offida (called “’Bov Fint” and “Vlurd”) but its also very particular the one in Ascoli Piceno. The fest of S. Basso, the protector of the town, is on Easter Monday. The following Sunday Ripatransone offers the traditional “Cavallo di fuoco”, a wooden horse filled with fire works which cross the streets of the medieval village in nigh time.

CUISINE

The area of Piceno is a land rich in gastronomic traditions. It is impossible to talk about cuisine in Cupra Marittima without considering the link with the sea and fish dishes. Some of the most famous dishes are the alici alla scottadito (deep fried anchovies), the bomboletti (a particular kind of sea snails) and the famous fish stew Brodetto alla Sambenedettese. Among the excellencies of our land we shall mention the maccheroncini of Campofilone and the famous vincisgrassi (a special lasagne, sometimes also called timballo). However, the most famous dish of the Piceno area is the Olive Ripiene all’Ascolana (fried olives stuffed with meat).

WINES

The area of Ascoli Piceno has a very strong tradition of wines. The most famous DOCs (Controlled origin denomination) wines are Falerio dei Colli Ascolani, Rosso Piceno and Rosso Piceno Superiore. Lately several producers carried out a very important activity of selection of grape varieties and vineyards. The production of two ancient varieties, abandoned since more than half century, were restored: Pecorino, Passerina and Bordò. A tour of local wine producers could be a very good chance to visit the countryside of Piceno and at the same time to enjoy a glass of high quality wine. In Cupra Marittima you can also find two excellent winemakers, Oasi degli Angeli, with its award winning Kurni, and Macondo, with its Blanko.

Cupra Marittima has a wide offer for sport and free time, like skating club, tennis club, cycling routes in/off road, kayaking and catamaran, kite and wind surf courses. A cycling-walking path crosses the village and heads to the close towns of Grottammare and San Benedetto del Tronto, for an overall of 12 miles along the coast.
